time to get cozy

I recently scoured my local thrift store with a friend and brought home several wool sweaters. I love to recycle old wool sweaters, felt them and make purses or pillows out of them. The sleeves of the sweaters usually go unused, until now. I found that the felted sweater sleeves fit perfectly over a coffee cup or travel mug. I embellished each cozy differently with crochet edging, embroidery and felt accents. How fun to have a cool, recycled cute cozy for your coffee! You’ll be the envy of all your friends!!

Did you know that it is estimated that 14 billion cups of coffee are served every year wrapped in a single-use, cardboard coffee sleeves which ends up adding up to 2.8 billion pounds of trash? Ugh. That makes my stomach sink. But…YOU can save a tree, be proud that you’ve used an up-cycled item…plus, look super stylish with my new coffee cozies!

The coffee cozies are great eco-friendly gifts for under $10 and are now available in my Etsy shop. You can click the “SHOP” tab above or click on my Etsy showcase on the right sidebar. Valentine’s Day is upon us so grab your coffee lover a cute coffee cozy!

happy birthday house

My dear, old house turned 100 this year. I thought I’d better do a post about it before year’s end…which is coming upon us quickly. My house has gone through many changes in the past 14 years that I have lived in it. When we purchased the house in 1996 it was such a whirlwind of events we only had a mere week to get it prepared for us to move into. Me, my sister, my parents and friends went in with guns (paint brushes) a blazing and painted everything white.

Luckily, I had camera in hand and took photos before we started painting. The colors were garish. The carpets…blue shag, orange, plaid(ugh) were either glued to the floors, covered in petrified cat poop, or had disintegrated purple carpet pads under them that were the consistency of silly putty. The kitchen was disgusting. I don’t think the cupboards had EVER been cleaned. We chiseled years of gunk off of them with putty knives. My sis and I had a vision, though, and saw through all the awful decor and grime.

Warning: photo overload to follow…

We did most of the work by ourselves, including the floors. We rented a sander and had the floors sanded and sealed within a week’s time. The main expense was for new wiring & some minor plumbing (which was done by professionals)…everything else was done inexpensively with old fashioned elbow grease and paint.

The kitchen was probably the biggest expense and wasn’t completed until 2008 – with new counter-tops, completely new wall of cabinetry, new stove and tin backsplash.

Kitchen corner, 1996. Ugh.

The bathroom has changed quite a bit. We took out the old clawfoot tub (please don’t hate…it was just too inconvenient with a baby and I was tired of whacking my shins on the side of it every time I climbed in!). We had a stall tub/shower installed, kept all the wainscoting and original towel bars and added wallpaper and a medicine cabinet. I’m still not terribly thrilled with the bathroom. My plan is to take out the tub/shower and have a tiled corner stall shower with glass enclosure and add a sink/vanity using an old dresser or sideboard.

My bedroom corner, 2010...with built in closet

There is only ONE closet (a small walk-in) in my house. Fortunately, my crafty father was able to build some cute corner closets in my daughter’s bedroom and in my bedroom.

The property has changed a great deal over the years with many new gardens, plantings, and even a white picket fence. I won’t bore you with all those photos.

Sorry, there are no exterior photos of my house. The exterior is in need of some major re-vamping. The poor house still has its yucky ashphalt shingles which will, hopefully, be removed to reveal old clapboard that I will tackle painting some year!

Happy birthday dear, old house! Here’s to many more years (and renovations)!!

*** Thanks to all my friends & family who helped along the way…it wouldn’t have been possible to accomplish this much without you!***

new scarf

Last year when I opened the Garnet Hill catalog I immediately fell in love with the Haverhill scarf.

Garnet Hill Haverhill Scarf

The $90 price tag, on the other hand, was something I didn’t love. I knew I could make my own ‘granny square’ scarf so….a year later (yep, it took me THAT long to crochet all the pieces) here is my version…

It’s not as intricate as the original but, unfortunately, I don’t have hours upon hours of extra time and had to choose a granny square pattern that was reasonably simple or it would have taken me years to make this scarf!
